History & heritage
Aargau is the cradle of the Habsburg dynasty, whose ancestral castle still stands above the Aare. Conquered by the Confederates in 1415, it was ruled as a subject territory for almost four centuries.
It became a full canton under Napoleon's Act of Mediation in 1803. Today it is an industrial and energy hub between Zürich, Basel and Bern, famous for its thermal baths in Baden and Bad Zurzach.
