History & heritage
Appenzell joined the Confederation in 1513; the Reformation split it in 1597 into Catholic Innerrhoden and Protestant Ausserrhoden.
Innerrhoden is Switzerland's smallest canton by population and still holds its open-air Landsgemeinde each April, where citizens vote by raising their hands.
