History & heritage
Ausserrhoden became a half-canton when Appenzell divided along religious lines in 1597. Its scattered farmhouses and rolling hills grew rich from linen and embroidery.
Today it is known for folk traditions such as Silvesterchlausen, its rustic music and as a gateway to the Säntis.
