History & heritage
Founded in 1191 by Duke Berthold V of Zähringen, Bern joined the Confederation in 1353 and grew into the largest city-state north of the Alps.
Since 1848 it has been the Federal City, seat of government and parliament. Its arcaded old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the canton stretches from the Jura to the Bernese Oberland.
