History & heritage
Basel joined the Confederation in 1501. Home to Switzerland's oldest university (1460), it was a centre of humanism where Erasmus lived and worked.
Today the city on the Rhine is a global centre of life sciences, art fairs and museums, and every spring it stages the Basler Fasnacht.
