History & heritage

Neuchâtel was a principality under the Prussian king when it joined the Confederation in 1815; it became a republic after the revolution of 1848.

The canton is a heartland of Swiss watchmaking — La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle are UNESCO-listed watchmaking towns.
