History & heritage
As part of Unterwalden, Nidwalden is one of the three founding cantons of the 1291 Federal Charter.
Lying on Lake Lucerne below the Stanserhorn and Bürgenstock, it is today a low-tax canton known for aircraft maker Pilatus.
