Obwalden, the other half of Unterwalden, is among the founding members of 1291. The White Book of Sarnen records the early legends of the Confederation.
It is home to Switzerland's patron saint Niklaus von Flüe of Flüeli-Ranft and to the mountain resort of Engelberg.
